UEFA Champions League: Villarreal Downed By Odense, Dinamo Zagreb Slaughter Malmo

While the Bayern Munich vs. FC Zurich match was the big draw in terms of today's Champions League action, there were plenty of other matches to, with the home sides all earning victories in a clean sweep - the biggest surprise being Odense's 1-0 victory over Villarreal.

Wisla Krakow vs. APOEL Nicosia

Wisla Krakow napped to a 1-0 win over Cypriot outfit APOEL Nicosia thanks to a 71st minute goal by Patryk Malecki. Nothing else happened in this match.

Dinamo Zagreb vs. Malmo FF

Three second-half goals led Dinamo Zagreb past a fairly miserable Malmo side after the teams had traded scores in the first half. Jorge Cruz Campos netted twice for the home side, including a second half penalty to put Zagreb up 3-1, and Ante Rukavina and Fatos Beciraj completed the scoring. Malmo's Agon Mehmeti got an away goal, but it's probably not going to be enough.

Maccaibi Haifa vs. Racing Genk

Last year's Belgian champions staged something of a comeback in the second half after going down 2-0 to their Israeli hosts, but Elyaniv Barda's 61st minute goal wasn't enough to overturn Weam Amasha and Vladimer Dvalishvili's first half strikes. With the score at 2-1, however, the away goal is vital for Genk - it's not a terrible result.

Odense SK vs. Villarreal

An absolutely spectacular defensive error by Villarreal centre half Christian Zapata capped off a miserable game and led to a 1-0 win for the hosts. Hans Henrik Andreasen ended up with the goal in the 84th minute (and a good finish it was too), but Zapata's play was just abominably poor there. We'll have a video when we can find it. Although Odense had the upper hand early, their guests had stormed back into the match and so it's a little surprising that it's the Danes that have hopped into a 1-0 first leg advantage. Them's the breaks in football, though.

With two key players returning for Odense in the second leg, the minnows might - might - be able to do the unthinkable in Spain. Which I guess makes it thinkable. They might be able to do the thinkable.
