Brian Wilson Injury: Giants Closer Placed On Disabled List

Inflammation in Brian Wilson's elbow will keep the closer out of action until at least August 31.

As expected, San Fransisco Giants closer Brian Wilson has been placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Wilson reported discomfort in his right elbow after his blown save against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, prompting a visit to the doctor on Tuesday. The world famous Dr. James Andrews diagnosed the closer with nothing more than inflammation, so Wilson will avoid any kind of surgery for the time being.

Wilson's blown save on Monday was his fifth of the season, with the closer converting 35 of 40 opportunities on the year. Although it hasn't exactly been a career year for Wilson, he's been respectable at worst. Along with the rest of the Giants' pitching staff, he's helping a team with a poor offense to a record that is currently seven games over .500, which puts them 2.5 games behind first place in the NL West and eight games out of a wild card spot. Wilson will be eligible to come off of the disabled list on August 31.
