Rockies Swing Trade For Kevin Kouzmanoff

With Ian Stewart being something of a disaster, the Colorado Rockies need a third baseman. They've gotten by with Ty Wigginton and an assortment of others (including, lately, Chris Nelson), but Tuesday afternoon, they might or might not have landed an upgrade from the A's. Jane Lee:

Kouzmanoff traded to for future considerations.

Kevin Kouzmanoff will report to triple-A Colorado Springs for the time being. However, he could get time in the majors down the stretch to show whether or not he's worth tendering a contract in the offseason. The 29-year-old third baseman struggled with the A's a year ago and struggled even more in 2011, but he's posted an .890 OPS with triple-A Sacramento this summer, so the Rockies might see if he can bounce back.

At his best, Kouzmanoff plays good defense and flashes legitimate home-run power. His OPS+ has dropped each year since 2007, so he's not exactly trending positively, but it's worth seeing what he can do in a hitter-friendly environment.

All the A's really get out of this is a little salary relief, as Kouzmanoff no longer factored into their plans.
