Mike Patterson's Collapse Reportedly Related To Brain AVM

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Philadelphia Eagles organization and their fans are wishing the best for DT Mike Patterson, who collapsed on the field Wednesday morning at Eagles training camp practice at LeHigh University. Eagles doctors refused to speculate on what caused the collapse and the seizure but ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reports Patterson has something called brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation).

My limited medical research indicates it's a tangle of blood vessels in the brain. We're not quite sure why they occur or what causes them but they can be fatal given the circumstances.

Fixing it can be done one of three ways: surgery on his brain; glueing up the abnormal vessels; and radiation. It's unclear what Patterson's next course of action is.

After he collapsed, Patterson was rushed to the hospital where he quickly texted Eagles employees and teammates that he was fine. He was described as alert and stable in the hospital, where he stayed overnight.
