Ray Ray Armstrong NFL Draft prospect notes

Ray Ray Armstrong
6'4, 215 pounds | Safety | Miami

First word:
How good is Ray Ray Armstrong? He lives up to his number, 26. It's quite a feat considering it was worn by former Miami star Sean Taylor. It's easy to compare the two. Like Taylor, Armstrong is a big, physical safety with solid coverage skills. NFL teams are already getting in touch with Armstrong's high school coaches to get more background on the junior.

Armstrong started only four games of the 2010 season, but saw significant playing time throughout the year. He finished 2010 with 76 tackles and three interceptions (taking one back for a touchdown).

Games viewed: (All 2010) Ohio State, Florida State, Georgia Tech

Bold statement: Armstrong will develop into the best safety eligible for the 2012 NFL Draft.

Notes:

• Has exceptional size for the position. Like most big, long safeties he's a little stiff. But it's not like he's Taylor Mays or Robert Sands. He's somewhat more fluid.

• Moving in a straight line, Armstrong has good speed for a player his size. Still, he can be beaten when picking up fast receivers coming through his zone.

• Has bouts of inconsistency from game to game. Clearly needs to start on a regular basis to meet his potential.

• Needs to improve on his instincts. Tens to be a step late reacting to where a play is going to develop.

• Gets off his blocks much better than most college defensive backs.

• Good in man coverage situations on tight ends where he doesn't have to play deep.

• Shows decent but inconsistent hands to make a play on the ball.

• Is known as a mature individual with no known character issues. Takes part in an annual community give back day dedicated to him.
