Red Sox Vs. Yankees: Guess What? It's Raining, Again

If you live on the Eastern seaboard, you are likely sick of seeing rain this summer. Between a wet and cold spring and the rains from Hurricane Irene, wet weather records were set all up and down the East Coast.

The Yankees have been particularly unlucky this season with the weather. They have had seven games postponed: three at home and four on the road, with three of the latter in Baltimore, where if anything the weather has been even worse than in New York. And they also played a game on Sept. 6 at Yankee Stadium in a steady downpour after a four-hour rain delay.

They might have to do the same thing tonight, because the New York metro weather forecast does not look good:

Tonight: Showers. Areas of fog before midnight. Low around 66. East wind around 6 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Midafternoon Friday, area radars looked like this:

There are a few breaks in that rain shield, and it's coming from the south and southwest. Maybe they'll get the proverbial "window" in which they can play; maybe they'll play again in a moderate rain. That seems to be de rigeur in baseball today; games are played in conditions that would have resulted in pre-game postponements as recently as 10 years ago.

But more money is at stake today, so they play through conditions that risk injury. That, of course, could cost teams even more money if a high-priced player gets hurt. Those stakes are even higher this weekend. The Yankees still have something to play for, despite having clinched the AL East two days ago; they have a magic number of two to clinch home field throughout the AL playoffs. Meanwhile, if the Red Sox don't play, they face a Friday evening of sitting around and potentially watching both the Rays and Angels make up ground on them.

No one in baseball has any more off days. If tonight's matchup between starters Jon Lester and Freddy Garcia can't be played tonight, it would likely be made up as a day/night doubleheader Saturday. However...

Saturday: Showers. High near 77. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Stay tuned. Tonight's game will be carried nationally on MLB Network beginning at 7 p.m. ET -- weather permitting.
