As always, the NCAA Tournament selection committee made some selections that a lot of people were unhappy with. A number of solid major conference and mid-major teams have been relegated to the NIT thanks to the inclusion of the BYU Cougars and the Iona Gaels in the NCAA Tournament field. Both squads will both have to wait until their second game to truly prove the doubters wrong.
BYU did what was expected of them this season, finishing third in the West Coast Conference (WCC) behind the Gonzaga Bulldogs and St. Mary's Gaels. The Cougars were able to split with Gonzaga in the regular season, but lost to the Bulldogs in the WCC tournament semifinal. Iona won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title, but was upset by the Fairfield Stags in the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament.
BYU and Iona play in the late Tuesday "First Four" game. The winner will move on to face the Marquette Golden Eagles.
Game Date/Time: Tuesday, March 13, 9 p.m. ET
Venue: University of Dayton Arena, Dayton, Ohio
TV: truTV
Announcers: Jim Nantz, Clark Kellogg and Steve Kerr
