Mississippi Valley State leads Western Kentucky 23-19 at halftime of the first game of the NCAA Tournament.
Kevin Burwell leads MVSU and all scorers with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Teen Akol is the top scorer for the Hilltoppers with seven points.
Both teams were plagued by turnover troubles and poor shooting in the first 20 minutes. Western Kentucky, the champions of the Sun Belt, went into the locker room with twice as many turnovers (12) as made field goals (6). MVSU did not fare much better, connecting on just 8-of-29 shots (27.6 perent).
The winner of Tuesday’s game from UD Arena in Dayton, OH will face No. 1 overall seed Kentucky at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, KY on Thursday.
