Without Fab Melo, the No. 1 seeded Syracuse Orange held on to get by No. 15 seed UNC-Ashville, but will take on a much tougher opponent in No. 8 seed Kansas State.
The Syracuse Orange were able to get past UNC-Ashville in a game that was much closer than it should have been for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but will tip off against the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday. In the first round the Orange picked up 72-65 win to advance, but the absence of center Fab Melo was clearly noticeable.
The No. 8 seed Wildcats also squeaked by in their first round match up with No. 9 seed Southern Miss, but picked up the 70-64 win. Unlike UNC-Ashville was able to do, the Wildcats should be able to take advantage of the absence of Fab Melo in the paint.
The winner of the Syracuse Vs. Kansas State will move on to the regional semifinals to take on the winner of No. 4 Wisconsin Vs. No. 5 Vanderbilt.
