Reports surfaced on Friday night that the Washington Redskins had made a trade with the St. Louis Rams for the No. 2 overall pick. And by Saturday afternoon the teams were confirming the news. It won't actually become official until Tuesday when the new league year begins but both sides have acknowledged that a trade has been agreed upon.
The Redskins confirmed it with this statement:
"In order to execute each of our club's plans for free agency and the upcoming draft, we have agreed to a trade between our two teams for the second pick in the 2012 draft. We will submit this trade to the NFL for approval."
That's a mundane statement but the ramifications of this trade are huge. Washington is now in position to acquire Robert Griffin III, the No. 2 quarterback on the board. It's been reported for a while now that Mike Shanahan and the Redskins like RG3 and this trade confirms it.
The Rams have also confirmed the trade to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
