With the 21st pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, the New England Patriots select Syracuse Orange defensive end/outside linebacker Chandler Jones. Jones is the 38th-ranked prospect in the draft and the sixth-rated defensive end, according to Mocking the Draft's rankings, though some evaluators grew more bullish on his chances of becoming a first-round pick as the draft neared.
Jones is the brother of Arthur Jones, who plays for the Baltimore Ravens, and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. He was a three-year starter for Syracuse, but suffered a knee injury in 2011 that caused him to miss five games. Here's what Mocking the Draft had to say about Jones before the draft.
Jones earned first-team all-conference honors after finishing with 38 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. But his development as a prospect was hampered by the injury. Jones will enter the NFL loaded with potential because of his size and athleticism. But he needs to get better against the run and his technique needs some work.
