NFL Draft 2012: Chandler Jones Could Be Draft's Best Defensive Player, Says Mike Mayock

Stay connected with SB Nation

The buzz about former Syracuse Orange defensive end Chandler Jones heading into Thursday night's first round of the 2012 NFL draft has been somewhat muted, at least compared to many of the higher-profile players in the draft pool; Mocking the Draft ranks Jones as the 38th-best player available. But NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock thinks Jones will one day be regarded as the draft's best defensive player.

Rotoworld scribbled down Mayock's thoughts on Jones from Wednesday night.

"I'm gonna make a statement," said Mayock. "Three years from now, I'm gonna say Chandler Jones is the best defensive player to come out of this draft."

Mike Lombardi concurred with Mayock, and also said that there's a chance Jones could be a top-10 pick. If he is, that could put him in the company of Quinton Coples and Courtney Upshaw, seen as two of the better players who could end up at defensive line in this draft. Several other projections suggest Jones could be a match for the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 15 or the New England Patriots at No. 19, according to Big East Coast Bias.
