In the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft on Thursday, only two of the teams in the AFC West actually made selections. The Kansas City Chiefs selected Dontari Poe in hopes that he can become their new starting nose tackle, but the former Memphis Tigers player needs a lot of work before he will be NFL-ready.
The San Diego Chargers picked up outside linebacker Melvin Ingram, who they are hoping will become a big component of their defense in 2012 and the years beyond. The Oakland Raiders, of course, gave up their first round pick to the Cincinnati Bengals in order to secure Carson Palmer, while the Denver Broncos were content to let their first-round picks go to teams that felt they needed them more.
