On the first night of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos traded down and completely out of the first round of the draft. They acquired more picks in return and went after it on day two. Among the highlights of the Broncos draft class is Arizona State QB Brock Osweiler.
Osweiler will serve as Peyton Manning's back up and possibly his successor as well. No pressure, Osweiler. It was a little bit of a surprise to see the Broncos take a quarterback that high (57), but they do need insurance in case Peyton Manning's health isn't 100 percent for whatever reason.
Earlier in the second round, the Broncos drafted DT Derek Wolfe, which seemed like a reach, according to the various mock drafts out there. The Broncos needed defensive line help, and they chose Wolfe over Jerel Worthy, who was still on the board.
The Broncos had a decent draft -- not outstanding but not horrible, either. If Osweiler ends up working out, then the class gets much better.

The New England Patriots had a bit of an odd NFL Draft, at least based on what I was expecting. We figured the Patriots, who were armed with two first round picks, would be trading around, which they like to do. They did make a couple of trades in the first round, but they moved up to select two defensive players.
The Patriots like to move back and stockpile picks. They instead moved up to select Syracuse DE Chandler Jones and Alabama LB Dont'a Hightower. The Patriots had a need entering the offseason to fix the pass rush. They clearly made that a priority entering the NFL Draft and succeeded in upgrading the talent at that position.
In Round 2, the Patriots selected Illinois CB Tavon Wilson, which NFL Network's Mike Mayock called a big shock. Wilson was rated lower on draft boards. Bill Belichick and the Patriots have a need in the secondary as well, so this was likely a pick based on that.
I'm leaving the Patriots with a B. I like the aggressiveness in the first round to address a need area. But the Wilson pick is a little disappointing (and it's not like Belichick is a master at drafting defensive backs).

The Indianapolis Colts had arguably the best 2012 NFL Draft of anyone -- they got Andrew Luck. The Stanford QB was the No. 1 quarterback (and player) in this draft, and the Colts can seamlessly transition from Peyton Manning to Luck. Must be nice to be a Colts fan.
The NFL Draft also brought the Colts a pair of new tight ends, including Luck's former Stanford teammate, Coby Fleener. The Colts turned around in the third round and selected Clemson TE Dwayne Allen. This may be some copycat tactics from Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, the New England Patriots two tight ends.
The Colts didn't pick any defensive players in the first four rounds, which was odd. But they did select Alabama NT Josh Chapman, who will hold down the nose in their new 3-4 defense under Chuck Pagano. Chapman tore his ACL late last year and does have medical concerns.
This was a good draft for the Colts. Since they picked up the best player at the most important position, I have to give them an A.

The New York Jets had eight selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, and I'm having a hard time judging how they did. There seems to be some boom-or-bust potential with their first two picks -- North Carolina's Quinton Coples and Georgia Tech's Stephen Hill.
Coples was considered in the top 10 by some teams, but he fell to the 16th pick, something you didn't see very often in mock drafts leading up to the draft. The Jets also had Melvin Ingram on the board but chose Coples instead, a move that's been criticized by some.
Hill was considered a first round talent by some teams, but he ended up falling in the draft as well. The Jets traded up in the draft for him and selected him 43rd overall. Hill had an impressive Combine which will need to translate to the NFL game.
Check out the rest of the Jets draft picks.
Overall, I'll stick with a B for the Jets because there is a lot of potential with those picks, but I do think there's a bust concern there as well.

While it's still entirely too early to tell who "won" the 2012 NFL Draft my early vote would go to the St. Louis Rams. Head coach Jeff Fisher and GM Les Snead were terrific in the way they moved down the draft board and still picked up good players while acquiring even more picks.
The best move of the year for the Rams was trading the second overall pick in the draft to the Washington Redskins for an extra 2nd round pick in 2012, and 1st round picks in each of the next two years. That's one of the biggest trades in NFL history.
The next move was trading down from the 6th pick to the Dallas Cowboys 14th pick. The Rams only received a 2nd round pick in the deal, which is less than similar trades in the past. But the Rams drafted Michael Brockers at No. 14, which they would've done at No. 6 anyway.
Brian Quick in the 2nd round has potential to be a good weapon for Sam Bradford. Janoris Jenkins was also worth the risk for the Rams considering they had three of the first 15 picks in the 2nd round.
Here are the rest of the Rams draft picks. he Rams deserve an A for the way they've been able to move around in the draft.

The 2012 NFL Draft is nearing the halfway point as we've gone through the first three rounds of the Draft. Rounds 4-7 come on Saturday afternoon but we can't wait that long to start grading the picks. SB Nation's YouTube crew recapped the second day of the NFL Draft.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Panthers: I really like this class so far -- Luke Kuechly and Amini Silatolu had 1st round buzz. Both are starters, possibly as soon as this year. Tempted to put them at an A.
Saints: Akiem Hicks in Round 3. That's it. Gotta fail the Saints.
Falcons: Peter Konz is a great pick in the 2nd round. Lamar Holmes adds to the offensive line depth. But that's it. The cost of doing business when you move up nearly two dozen spots, as the Falcons did last year.
Buccaneers: I'm starting to love this draft. Mark Barron in the 1st round, and Doug Martin at the end of Round 1. Both potential starters and areas of need. Then Lavonte David in the 2nd round, who is also at a position of need. Great picks.

The 2012 NFL Draft has gone through the first three rounds, and now we move on to the third day of the draft with Rounds 4-7. The NFC East has had some major movement in the first three rounds, with the Redskins trading up for Robert Griffin III and the Cowboys moving up to select Morris Claiborne. SB Nation's YouTube crew handed out video analysis of the NFC East in the NFL Draft.
Redskins: Getting Robert Griffin III changes everything. If the gamble works out, as I think it will, it's easily worth the risk.Cowboys: Adding Morris Claiborne is huge, and it came at a reasonable price.
Giants: Adding Rueben Randle at the end of Round 2 was a steal. His talent level is much better than that. David Wilson is a nice pick, too. GM Jerry Reese gets the benefit of the doubt that this will work out.
Eagles: Not a bad mix on defense. Fletcher Cox helps on the inside, Mychal Kendricks is a solid value in Round 2 and Vinny Curry adds to the pass rush. Nick Foles is a nice developmental project. Good draft.

The 2012 NFL Draft moves into its final day on Saturday afternoon with rounds 4-7. In the NFC West, the Rams are leading the way with one of the best drafts of any team in the league. The rest of the NFC West teams aren't doing as well, but then again they weren't armed with the picks the Rams were.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Rams: Huge fan of this one, too. Michael Brockers is a future starter. Brian Quick has the physical tools to be very good with Sam Bradford. Add in Janoris Jenkins (boom-or-bust), Isaiah Pead (solid running back value) and Trumaine Johnson (All-American). That's some serious talent.
Cardinals: Michael Floyd and Jamell Fleming through two picks. Floyd is the biggest impact.
Seahawks: I had Seattle at a D following Round 1. They move up a little here. Bruce Irvin still seems like a stretch in Round 1, but Bobby Wagner, linebacker out of Utah State, was taken at the right spot. Russell Wilson is also worth the risk in the 3rd round. Teams are desperate for quarterbacks.
49ers: A.J. Jenkins is a decent pick but 61 seemed a little high for LaMichael James. Who is he supposed to beat out? I'm just not sure I see the need here. I suppose teams in the NFC Championship game can take luxury picks.

The 2012 NFL Draft moves into its final day with rounds 4-7 coming on Saturday afternoon. The AFC North has two of the best drafting teams in the NFL in the Ravens and Steelers, and neither team has disappointed thus far. The Bengals are also having one of the best drafts to this point.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Bengals: Quantity is the word here. Five total picks in the first 93 picks -- Dre Kirkpatrick, Kevin Zeitler, Devon Still, Mohamed Sanu and Brandon Thompson. All are impact players, some as soon as this year.
Ravens: They deserve an A. Courtney Upshaw is the next great Ravens linebacker, and Kelechi Osemele allows them to avoid the next Ben Grubbs leaving. Bernard Pierce is a nice pick-up.
Steelers: David DeCastro is a sure thing in Round 1. Mike Adams is terrific value in Round 2. Sean Spence will fit in with the great Steelers linebackers.
Browns: Slowly, it's coming together. Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden and Mitchell Schwartz could all start this year.

The 2012 NFL Draft has moved through rounds 1-3, and now we move into the final day with rounds 4-7. The AFC East is having a decent draft so far. One of the highlights for the conference has been the Patriots moving up twice in the 1st round. The Bills picked up a solid offensive lineman in Cordy Glenn in Round 2 and Stephen Hill fell to the Jets in the 2nd round.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Bills: Stephon Gilmore and Cordy Glenn are both potential starters, if not immediate starters.
Dolphins: Not a bad draft when you pick up your future quarterback (Ryan Tannehill), offensive tackle (Jonathan Martin) and tight end (Michael Egnew).
Patriots: I like the trade-ups in Round 1, and Bill Belichick followed that up with two more defensive players -- Tavon Wilson and Jake Bequette.
Jets: Quinton Coples is a bit of a head-scratcher but not a bad pick. Stephen Hill is good value at 43. I thought he would be gone in the 1st round.
Rounds 4-7 are on Saturday afternoon.

The 2012 NFL Draft moves into the third day as the first three rounds are completed. The AFC West is having a decent draft so far. Besides the Raiders, who have had only one pick through the first three rounds. SB Nation's YouTube crew handed out video analysis of the AFC West in the first two days of the Draft.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Chargers: Melvin Ingram is a stud. Kendall Reyes fills a need as does Brandon Taylor.
Broncos: 36 seemed a little high for Derek Wolfe. Like the Brock Osweiler pick, considering Manning is 36 years old. Ronnie Hillman will fit into the running back rotation.
Chiefs: Boom-or-bust on Dontari Poe, but it could be a big boom. Jeff Allen is a future starter at guard. Donald Stephenson is the swing tackle. This is about depth.
Raiders: Tony Bergstrom. "I was the Raiders 1st draft pick ... 95th overall."
Rounds 4-7 of the NFL Draft are on Saturday afternoon.

The NFC North has had a solid NFL Draft to this point, with the Packers leading the way in SB Nation's NFL Draft grades. The Packers received an A, while the Bears, Lions and Vikings all received B's.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Packers: A little pre-emptive love for this draft, even though there may not be any stars here. I think the Packers have three starters with the first three picks, and they're all solid values. Starting with Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy in the 2nd round and Casey Hayward, who some had late 1st round buzz, in the 3rd round.
Bears: Shea McClellin was a bit of a reach. Alshon Jeffery was not. Nice value in Round 2 on Jeffery, a boom-or-bust player.
Lions: Riley Reiff is a starting quality offensive tackle. Ryan Broyles could need some time to get ready after his injury.
Vikings: Matt Kalil is a sure thing. Trading back into the 1st round for Harrison Smith wasn't a great move. Josh Robinson might be more talented than him.
Rounds 4-7 of the NFL Draft come on Saturday afternoon.

We've gone through three rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft with rounds 4-7 coming on Saturday afternoon. SB Nation's YouTube crew graded the entire AFC South through three rounds, video of which you can see below.
Check out SB Nation's NFL Draft grades, and view the video for more analysis.
Colts: Andrew Luck is a no-brainer. But two tight ends with their next two picks? With all the needs, two tight ends? Maybe they're the next Gronk and Hernandez but I don't see the strategy here.
Titans: Kendall Wright, Zach Brown and Mike Martin. No beef with any of those picks. All solid, in the right range.
Texans: Whitney Mercilus has some boom-or-bust question marks. No 2nd round pick. Brandon Brooks was a rising offensive lineman who didn't attend the Combine.
Jaguars: The only reason the Jags are going here is the 3rd round pick on the punter. The punter!
Rounds 4-7 of the NFL Draft take place on Saturday afternoon.
