One of the biggest surprises in the 2012 NFL Draft came with the 15th pick of the 1st round when the Seattle Seahawks selected West Virginia LB Bruce Irvin. Among the various media mock drafts leading up to the real thing, Irvin was widely considered a 2nd round prospect, at best a late 1st round pick.
I know you'll find this stunning but it appears the mock drafts were wrong. As it turns out, a number of teams had a 1st round grade on Irvin. The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers were reportedly interested and Seahawks GM John Schneider said the New York Jets were, too.
Schneider said on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday that he thought there was a "good chance" the Jets would've taken him with the next pick.
The Seahawks originally held the 12th overall pick but traded down with the Philadelphia Eagles three spots to No. 15, where they selected Irvin.
Immediately after the pick I thought it was a major reach, the draft's first big reach. But some of the comments following the pick have made me think Irvin was more highly rated among those that actually make the picks.

The 2012 NFL Draft is gone, and all that is left to do is analyze teams, assign grades, track undrafted free agents, and do things like examine where most of the players in the draft went to high school. Texas HS Football did just that, and found that the Lone Star State beat all comers.
In their listing of players selected in the 2012 NFL Draft by state, Texas placed first with 32 players selected, followed by Florida with 31 and California with 26. Ohio (18) and Georgia (13) rounded out the top five, and North Carolina (10), Illinois (eight), and Alabama and Washington (seven apiece) all had strong showings.
Texas' domination was helped by six players going in the top 20 of the draft, and three in the top 10. All three of those players — No. 1 pick Andrew Luck, No. 2 pick Robert Griffin III, and No. 8 pick Ryan Tannehill — were quarterbacks.

The 2012 NFL Draft wrapped up on Saturday evening. A total of 253 college football players heard their names called and will now have the chance to establish themselves as professionals.
The number of players selected at each position breaks down like this:
Quaterback: 11, four signal callers were picked in the first round.
Running back: 21, teams took flyers on complementary running backs and some players who had shown flashes before injuries limited them in college.
Wide receiver: 33, teams loaded up looking for role players in the later rounds capable of making an impact.
Tight end: 12, no tight ends were drafted in the 1st round.
Offensive line: 47, big bodies are always popular with teams constantly needing depth and hoping to find eventual starters in the later rounds.
Defensive line: 46, only four defensive linemen were drafted in the 1st round, far from last year's record of 12.
Linebacker: 30, Luke Kuechly of Boston College was the only linebacker picked in the 1st round.
Cornerback: 34, the cornerback position has become more and more important in league focused on passing. Teams found a number of talented corners in the middle rounds of the draft.
Safety: 16, for the second year in a row, the draft was thin on safety talent.
Kickers/punters: 6, Jacksonville added Bryan Anger, a punter, in the 3rd round, one of the more surprising picks of the draft.

The 5th round of the 2012 NFL Draft started off with a national champion -- Josh Chapman. The Alabama nose tackle was the first pick of the 5th round when the Indianapolis Colts turned in their card. This could end up being a solid pick because nose tackles aren't easy to find, especially when you're moving to a 3-4 defense, like the Colts are under Chuck Pagano.
Other highlights from this round include Bradie Ewing, the top fullback in the draft, going to the Falcons. Josh Norman, Coastal Carolina CB, went to the Panthers and Zebrie Sanders slid to the 6th round.
