Free Agent Mario Williams Not All About The Money

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Houston Texans had a terrific season in 2011 that sent them to their first postseason berth and first postseason victory in team history, both of which they were able to accomplish with a roster impacted by injuries throughout the year. They'll hope to improve on that performance next year. They'll also be hoping that impending free agent linebacker Mario Williams will be a part of the team when 2012 kicks off.

John McClain at The Houston Chronicle's Ultimate Texans blog reports that Williams is aware of the deep market for a talented linebacker this offseason, as well as the fact that he might be at the top of many teams' wish lists for their roster in 2012.

I'm not worried about that. It's really not that big of a deal to me. I was the first pick (in 2006), and I've already had everything I really wanted, so my biggest thing is to be in a good position, a good scheme, a good system and continuing my career. Hopefully, it works out.

It's always important to be in a position to be successful. That comes with teammates around you, coaching, having that winning attitude. You want to (play) where you can thrive no matter where you are.

Williams went on to say that he loves being in Houston, but his final decision will ultimately come down to what makes the most sense, business-wise. For their part, the Texans will hope to free up enough cap room to make Williams a competitive offer. They will not be able to afford a franchise tag for Williams, which would run them about $22.9 million.
