Omar Vizquel Signing With Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are signing super-veteran Omar Vizquel to a one-year contract. Vizquel will serve as infield insurance off the bench.

I'm just going to go ahead and let this steep for a little while. Omar Vizquel is a free agent. Or, Omar Vizquel was a free agent. He's not a free agent anymore. Because he's signing a contract - a one-year contract - with the Toronto Blue Jays. Just ask Jerry Crasnick:

Update: Omar Vizquel has agreed to terms with the #BlueJays

One recalls that Jamie Moyer just signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies last week. Moyer's 49, which is old (for a baseball player), but Vizquel's 44, which is also old (for a baseball player). Jamie Moyer and Omar Vizquel signed free agent contracts before Prince Fielder signed a free agent contract. That sentence doesn't actually mean anything - old players sign before young players all the time - but if you just read it quickly and don't think about it it sounds crazy.

One also recalls that Orlando Cabrera just retired. Orlando Cabrera's 37. He couldn't find work as a backup infielder. Omar Vizquel is finding work as a backup infielder.

And that's what he'll be in Toronto - a backup infielder. Take that, Mike McCoy! Vizquel can still do his thing all around the diamond, and though he doesn't hit much, he does have a 75 OPS+ over the last three years, which isn't terrible for a versatile glove. Plus, the leadership. Omar Vizquel literally oozes leadership. Literally. He oozes.

Vizquel has never played for the Blue Jays before. This will be his 24th season, but just his sixth team. Bruce Chen probably played for more teams in a month and a half.

According to Vizquel himself, this is a minor league contract, not a major league contract. So he is not guaranteed a roster spot. I have to think he'll probably get a roster spot, but he'll have to earn it in camp.
