Derek Jeter to undergo surgery, out 4-5 months

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports - Presswire

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will have surgery on his fractured left ankle that will cause him to miss four to five months.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will undergo surgery on his fractured left ankle on Saturday, Oct. 20 and is expected to miss four to five months. Assuming no setbacks, Jeter should return to the field by spring training.

Jeter fractured his ankle in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers going after a ground ball hit by Jhonny Peralta. Jeter, 38, has been with New York his entire career and is the all-time Yankee leader in games played, at bats, and hits.

Rather than fly with the Yankees to Detroit, Jeter went to Charlotte to see foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. Anderson is the leading expert in the field and will perform Jeter's surgery.

Without Jeter the Yankees will try to battle out of a 0-3 hole against the Tigers in the ALCS. Game 4 takes place in Detroit on Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:07 p.m. ET.
