Padres bring in walls at Petco Park

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

San Diego Padres hitters have long complained about the dimensions at their home ballpark. Now, the team is doing something to help those bats.

Almost since it opened in 2004, hitters -- particularly lefthanded hitters -- have complained about its spacious dimensions. Many Padres lefthanded hitters have had huge differentials in their home/road splits, particularly Adrian Gonzalez when he was a member of the team. In A-Gonz's best home run year as a Padre, 2009, he hit 28 home runs on the road, only 12 at Petco.

The Padres are doing something about that:

The changes in right field and right-center should help players like Yonder Alonso, who hit six home runs (with 23 doubles) at Petco in 2012, three home runs (with 16 doubles) on the road. Overall, the Padres hit 121 home runs in 2012 and ranked 14th in the National League; they hit 74 homers on the road and 47 at home. These changes will help San Diego hitters.

Padres pitchers, on the other hand, might have a different opinion...
