Arkansas State running game, Terrance Broadway INTs power Red Wolves past UL Lafayette

Points were scored on Tuesday night in Cajun country, the majority of them by Arkansas State (50-27), which ran all over ULL and set up a major Sun Belt showdown in a couple weeks with UL Monroe.

Red Wolves run all over ULL, 50-27

Arkansas State defeated UL Lafayette in a critical Sun Belt Conference head-to-head matchup Tuesday, 50-27. The Red Wolves were on the road with both teams carrying a 2-1 league record. The winner would control their own destiny against UL Monroe, the only Sun Belt team without a conference loss.

The Red Wolves and the Warhawks will face each other on Nov. 8.

The Ragin Cajuns were never in this game, as Arkansas State jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the second quarter and took a 26-7 advantage into halftime. The Red Wolves converted on a pair of field goals in the opening period, and then in the second, there was Frankie Jackson's 11-yard touchdown run and a 35-yard Ryan Aplin pass to Julian Jones. Arkansas State was up by as many as 29 points. Lafayette quarterback Terrance Broadway threw for three touchdowns, but the Ragin Cajuns defense had no answer for Arkansas State's rush attack, which logged 257 yards.

Box Score Hero: The Red Wolves' run game and play callers. At one point there were 27 straight rushing plays dialed up by Arkansas State. And they scored 50 points, on the road.

Rankings Ramifications: Of course neither team is ranked, but it was a big game for the Sun Belt standings.

But Did They Cover? According to the odds, this was an upset of epic proportions. The Ragin Cajuns were four-point favorites and got blown out by the Red Wolves

Ryan Aplin guns ASU to big lead

Arkansas State has given itself a commanding lead over Louisiana Lafayette at the break, 26-7. Ryan Aplin has thrown for 244 yards and a touchdown on only 28 attempts, while ULL has been unable to get much other than a couple of big passes from Terrance Broadway to Darryl Surgent and Javone Lawson.

The winner of this one will have three Sun Belt wins and move within a single victory of bowl eligibility, thereby narrowing down one of the most interesting conference title races in the country. Each has yet to play front-runner UL Monroe, which famously knocked off Arkansas and nearly Baylor and Auburn as well.

Last year, ASU raced out to a 17-0 lead on ULL before the Cajuns took the lead in the third quarter. The Red Wolves eventually won, but I'm just sayin', she ain't over yet. ULL averages 35.5 points per game, and all.
