Shanghai Bobby kept his perfect record intact with an easy victory in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday, October 6th. The Todd Pletcher trainee is now four-for-four in his brief career with victories in the Grade 2 Hopeful and now the Grade 1 Champagne.
The Champagne results came back strong in terms of speed figures; Shanghai Bobby earned a 94 Beyer Speed Figure and a 103 Equibase figure, the highest numbers for a juvenile colt in a graded stakes race this fall. The Brisnet figure will be released in the near future.
According to a report in the Daily Racing Form, the connections of Shanghai Bobby are not 100% certain to run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile due to their plans for the colt in the spring of 2013. Part-owner Jack Wolf spoke about the reasons for skipping the Juvenile:
“I was a believer then, and I probably am still, that the horses that run in the 2-year-old Breeders’ Cup race don’t come back,” Wolf said. “With the exception of last year; last year was unbelievable how they came back."
If Shanghai Bobby does skip the Juvenile, the race loses arguably it's top contender on either coast.
