Cardinals add beautiful alternate jersey to livery

The St. Louis Cardinals already sported some of the prettiest and classiest uniforms in professional sports. And they have been one of the very few Major League Baseball teams to resist the siren song of the alternate jersey.

Now they've changed the latter but kept the former, introducing an alternate jersey that will rank among the most esthetically pleasing in the sport.

The alternate jersey, which will be worn by the club for Saturday home games, will replace the "Cardinals" script across the front with "St. Louis," marking the first time since 1932 that the city's name will be sewn on a Cardinals uniform.

The famous "Birds on the Bat" logo remains, though it will be featured in more detail. The alternate jersey will come in an off-white color, similar to the cream color worn by the Cardinals from the 1940s-'60s. The red piping down the front is reminiscent of the franchise's uniforms of the '50s, and player numbers will still be incorporated as part of the front design.

When I see a club devote so much energy to this process, with such a lovely result, it gives me some hope that the Lords of the Realm will continue to resist the urge to plaster advertisements on their livery. I continue to believe that's inevitable, but every day without corporate logos on our beloved jerseys is a better day.
