Florida coasts in its tune-up for next week's rivalry game against Florida State
When the No. 6 team with the nation's No. 3 defense plays a team that is No. 5 in the Ohio Valley Conference, a shutout is brewing. The Florida Gators went up 7-0 on their first possession and never looked back, pounding out a 23-0 victory over an overmatched Jacksonville State team.
In addition to the opening score, the Gators added three Caleb Sturgis field goals and a defensive touchdown on their in-state opponent. The Gamecocks were able to sustain just two significant drives, both ending in missed field goals.
This was the second shutout of the year for Florida, who blanked Kentucky 38-0 Sept. 22.
Box Score Hero: Gators running back Mike Gillislee led the day with 122 of Florida's 202 rushing yards, including a 46-yard scamper. His 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the only offensive touchdown of the game by either team.
Rankings Ramifications: The No. 6 Gators hold steady against a weak opponent. Barring any of the teams above them in the BCS standings taking a loss, Florida should head into next week similarly ranked.
But Did They Cover? Despite the shutout, Florida failed to cover the 37.5 spread.
