The 2012 Philadelphia Marathon is underway, starting at 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philly on Sunday morning. This is the 59th installment of the race, which was founded in 1954.
As is the case every year, the Philly Marathon will serve as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, with participants needing to meet times set for specific age groups. $3,500 will be awarded to the top male and female finisher, with a course-record bonus of $1,500 also up for grabs.
Additional coverage can be found at SB Nation Philly.
Start Time: 7 a.m. ET
Weather Forecast: Temperatures are expected to be in the low-to-mid 40s for the beginning of the marathon, which began just after sunrise. The high for the day will be 51 degrees under partly cloudy skies.
Interesting storyline to follow: Mariska Kramer of the Netherlands will shoot for her third consecutive Philadelphia Marathon victory. Meanwhile, after an eight-year drought in the men's competition, United States runners have won three straight races. Will they make it a fourth?
