Phillies reportedly sign Humberto Quintero in wake of Carlos Ruiz suspension

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed catcher Humberto Quintero to a minor-league deal. The move is likely in response to losing starting catcher Carlos Ruiz for the first 25 games of next season due to a PED suspension.

The Philadelphia Phillies signed catcher Humberto Quintero to a minor-league deal on Tuesday, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

The move comes shortly after the announcement that Carlos Ruiz will serve a 25-game suspension to begin the 2013 season due to a second positive test for Adderall.

Quintero could likely see playing time while Ruiz serves his suspension. It is only a minor-league deal, so the Phillies aren't on the hook for much.

The 33-year-old Quintero, a native of Venezuela, had spent the bulk of his career with the Houston Astros before being traded to the Kansas City Royals shortly before the beginning of last season. The Royals released him in July, and he bounced around triple-A and did not see any more major-league playing time.

Quintero is a prototypical catch-and-throw backup, sporting the kind of cringe-inducing sub-.600 career OPS only tolerated in catch-and-throw backups. He does have a good defensive reputation and has thrown out 33 percent of would-be base-stealers over his career.
