Breeders' Cup 2012 Dirt Mile Results: Tapizar shocks at 15/1

Harry How

Race favorite Shackleford couldn't get the job done, falling to Tapizar in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita.

Tapizar and jockey Corey Nakatani assumed command of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at the top of the stretch and put away his rivals within the final quarter mile for an unexpectedly easy win at Santa Anita. Race favorite Shackleford broke poorly from the gate, made up ground to put himself into contention on the far turn but faded badly in the stretch.

Rail Trip finished well to grab second while Delegation and John Scott rounded out the top four.

Tapizar is a four-year-old colt by Tapit out of a Deputy Minister mare (Winning Call), trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Corey Nakatani. This was Taipzar's third win at Santa Anita in his career and the first grade 1 win.
