Breeders' Cup 2012 Mile Results: Wise Dan blows away his rivals

Harry How

Wise Dan wins the Breeders' Cup Mile with a record-breaking performance at Santa Anita.

In a race billed as a showdown between Wise Dan and Excelebration (IRE), it was the American, Wise Dan, that came out on top, stamping him the best horse in America. Wise Dan broke well from the gate but was in no hurry to go to the lead in the early stages, settling into a good rhythm along the rail. At the top of the lane, Wise Dan kicked clear of the field and rolled home through a final quarter-mile of 22.97 with little challenge from his rivals. 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom finished second, Obviously (IRE) finished third, and Excelebration finished a disappointing fourth.

The track at Santa Anita has been fast all weekend, on both turf and dirt; the final time of the Mile was 1:31.78, the fastest turf mile time ever at Santa Anita.

Wise Dan is a 5-year-old gelding by Wiseman's Ferry out of a Wolf Power (SAF) mare (Lisa Danielle), trained by Charles Lopresti and ridden by John Velazquez. With his victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile, Wise Dan has won three Grade 1 races in 2012.
