Matt Bush to serve 3 years with plea deal, per reports

Jerome Miron-US PRESSWIRE

Former top pick Matt Bush will serve three years behind bars after plea bargaining his DUI case.

Former No. 1 pick Matt Bush has been sentenced to three years in prison after agreeing to a plea bargain for his DUI hit-and-run arrest, per the Tampa Bay Times.

Bush hit a motorcyclist with his SUV and then fled the scene, despite actually running right over the man's head, according to a witness via ESPN.com. Luckily, the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, which ultimately saved his life.

The former top pick has been sitting behind bars in a Charlotte County jail in Florida since March, waiting to be tried for his seven charges. The three years he is due to serve will be added to the time he has already spent in prison.

The former top pick was also driving while he had a suspended license, further complicating the story.

"He's taking it pretty good," Bush's father Daniel told the Tampa Bay Times. "He's not crying or sulking. He's preparing for it. Everybody in our family is backing him up."

Bush was taken by the San Diego Padres in 2004 with the idea of him becoming the next great shortstop, but it never materialized. He was eventually traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 after he was involved in a drunk-driving incident.

Ultimately, Bush wound up signing with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010.
