2012 New Mexico Bowl score: Nevada surging, Stefphon Jefferson stalking Ka'Deem Carey

USA TODAY Sports

Arizona's in trouble early in New Mexico, and Stefphon Jefferson is threatening to take Ka'Deem Carey's rushing title.

The rarest of treats: a bowl game with actual stakes. Arizona's Ka'Deem Carey entered as the nation's leading rusher, with 1,757 yards on the ground. Nevada's Stefphon Jefferson came in ranked No. 2, with 1,703. And after five total drives, Carey now leads Jefferson by only three yards.

Jefferson's had a big first quarter, I'm saying, with 61 yards already, as the Wolf Pack have a 21-0 lead already.

Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo is also lighting up Arizona's overwhelmed defense, with nine of his 10 passes finding their marks, two touchdowns and 128 total yards of offense. The most recent, which followed up a kick return fumble by the Wildcats, was this beautiful wheel route strike to Zach Studfeld into those fearlessly red New Mexico Bowl end zones:

ESPN's Danny Kanell called the shot, pointing out Nevada coach Chris Ault likes to strike deep to capitalize on momentum after turnovers.
