Steven Jackson surpasses 10,000 career yards against Vikings

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Steven Jackson surpassed 10,000 career rushing yards in Week 15 against the Minnesota Vikings, highlighting a brilliant career in St. Louis.

The Rams haven't had much to write home about lately, but at least they can take pride that their long-time running back Steven Jackson has achieved a rushing benchmark that puts him in very good company. In their Week 15 game against the Minnesota Vikings, Rams running back Steven Jackson surpassed 10,000 career rushing yards. He came into the game with 9,929 and after 73 yards on 13 carries early in the fourth quarter he hit the bench mark that few NFL backs have ever achieved.

Jackson, who had seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons coming into the 2012 season, has been the one bright spot that many Rams fans could cheer about despite the fact that they haven't had a winning season since 2003. Jackson, known for his tough running style and for being a leader on and off the field, has had a great career even though he has only been in the playoffs once (the Rams made the playoffs as an 8-8 team in Jackson's rookie season).

There have been 26 NFL running backs to hit the 10,000 rushing yards benchmark and of those 26, 13 are in the NFL Hall of Fame, which doesn't include players like Ledainian Tomlinson, who will likely be in the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible. Of course, Jackson has quite a few years left to play if he plans on becoming the all-time NFL rushing leader as he would have to rack up over 18,355 yards to unseat Emmitt Smith.
