Miguel Vazquez dominated an outmatched Mercito Gesta in a dreadfully boring fight on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez undercard.
In terms of the Vegas gambling odds Mercito Gesta vs. Miguel Vazquez was the tightest fight on the Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao HBO pay-per-view card, but it certainly didn't look like it'd be the most exciting.
Things got a little chippy in the first round as some outside circling by Vazquez was met by taunting from Gesta. The problem was that Vazquez almost certainly had won the round. Nothing really changed as the fight wore on over the next few rounds. Vazquez used his length and movement to circle and pop Gesta with jabs and long right hands.
It wasn't exactly the prettiest thing in the world, but it certainly was effective. Gesta was left smiling at many points, possibly out of frustration or confusion as he just couldn't get anything done.
During the fight, Twitter filled with reports of people who were turning on the UFC on Fox event or the NBC Sports boxing card waiting for the fight to end due to being uninteresting and slow paced. It's an unfortunate reality that Vazquez, at his most effective, is not a fighter who is "made for TV." And Gesta wasn't exactly pulling his weight in making the fight interesting. During all of the reaction on the web, the HBO announce crew trashed the fight. At one point Larry Merchant requested that the twelve round fight be reduced to eight rounds.
By the final round, Jim Lampley excitedly exclaimed that "blessedly" the fight is almost over.
Boring or not, Vazquez was effective and clearly won in a fight that oddsmakers saw as close.
The official scorecards read: 117-111, 119-109 and 118-110 for Vazquez
