One of the great rivalries in boxing may have ended with one of the great knockouts, SB Nation's Luke Thomas says. Juan Manual Marquez knocked out Manny Pacquiao with a brutal punch near the end of the sixth round to end it.
Juan Manuel Marquez was not about to let his fight against Manny Pacquiao be decided by the judges. A hard right at 2:59 of the sixth round took care of that issue Saturday night in Las Vegas. Pacquiao left his feet from the blow and was knocked out cold by it, ending the fight.
How do you rank the knockout?
SBNation's Luke Thomas called it "an unbelievable victory" for Marquez. "An unbelievable rivalry. A punch of the year. A knockout of the year. A fight of a lifetime."
Before that, both boxers had been knocked the canvas once. One ringside scoring put Marquez behind 47-46 at the time of the knockout. Pacquiao seemed to be gaining momentum up until the fateful blow.
One punch was all it took.
So what's next for the boxers? Thomas says, "It kills, unfortunately, any hope of there ever being a fight with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. ... And I doubt Marquez will ever take that fight."
