Most expect Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to be released before March 8 when his big bonus is due. If he's healthy, there should be plenty of teams hoping to sign him. However, the Kansas City Chiefs might have been a bit too eager to note their interest in the soon-to-be free agent. Head coach Romeo Crennel might get his team slapped with some tampering charges thanks to his comments at the NFL Combine.
On Manning, who is under contract with the Colts but soon could be released, Crennel said, "I'm not supposed to talk about anyone else's players. He's still a player with Indianapolis. But with a talent like that, I would be crazy not to consider it if he were available. I'll leave it at that."
While for the most part Crennel's comments are harmless, the NFL rules on tampering are pretty clear that you cannot discuss interest of a player that is under contract with another NFL team.
"Any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in another club's player to that player's agent or representative, or to a member of the news media, is a violation of this Anti-Tampering Policy. (Example of a prohibited comment: "He's an excellent player, and we'd very much like to have him if he were available, but another club holds his rights.")"
Interestingly enough, the Chiefs won a tampering charge against the Detroit Lions last season when the Lions made some comments about safety Jarrad Page.
