Mariners, Hong-Chih Kuo Reach Deal

The Seattle Mariners have reportedly reached a major-league deal with Hong-Chih Kuo, the oft-injured, occasionally dominant left-handed reliever.

Hong-Chih Kuo used to be one of the best left-handed relievers in baseball, finishing the 2010 with a 1.20 ERA -- a Dodgers record for a pitcher with more than 50 innings. His 2011 was a nightmare, though, as he was put on the disabled list with an anxiety disorder following a bout with the yips. He finished the season with a 9.00 ERA and 23 walks in 27 innings.

Oh, and after the season he had his fifth elbow surgery. You don't see a lot of year-to-year swings quite like that. But if a pitcher is looking to get his career back on track, there's almost no place better than Safeco Field. From Dylan Hernandez:

Kuo will get a chance to make the Mariners and join former teammate George Sherrill as lefties in the Seatlle bullpen. The contract is reported to be heavily incentivized, with a $500,000 base salary and over $2 million in incentives, though that hasn't been confirmed.
