The SB Nation two-round NFL mock draft continues along with each lead NFL team blogger making the pick for their team. Up now is the Miami Dolphins with the No. 8 overall pick.
With the eighth pick in the 2012 SB Nation NFL Writers Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Kevin Nogle of the Phinsider breaks down the choice and I respond after the jump. For more on the Dolphins, make sure to check out thePhinsider.com.
Kevin Nogle explains: Taking Tannehill here may not be a popular choice among Miami Dolphins fans. He’s a reach at the eight spot, and I would agree with many fans that he may not be worth taking here. But, the Dolphins need a quarterback, and he’s the top one left on the board.
There’s a good possibility that the Dolphins could look at Melvin Ingram at this position as well, and I would love that pick. He’s the perfect pass rusher the Dolphins need to pair with Cameron Wake. But, in the end, the need for a quarterback outweighs the pros for picking Ingram.
The Dolphins know Tannehill, having his college head coach, Mike Sherman, as the team’s new offensive coordinator. If they believe he is capable of being a franchise quarterback, then I am all for this pick - even if it is a reach in a down quarterback draft year.
Dan Kadar responds: My opinion of Tannehill isn't quite as high as other draft analysts. He's a good quarterback with a solid skill set. But Kevin is correct that the Dolphins need a quarterback and Tannehill is the best one remaining. It would behoove the Dolphins to start Matt Moore, who is decent in spurts. That would allow Tannehill to sit back, learn and adjust to the NFL. If Tannehill is allowed to do that, it will help his development. It also doesn't help that the Dolphins have few weapons on offense outside of Davone Bess, Reggie Bush and the above-average Brian Hartline.
