Cameron Maybin and the San Diego Padres agreed to a five-year, $25 million extension, the team announced Saturday. The deal also includes a club option for 2017 worth more than $7 million, meaning Maybin could earn north of $32 million over the life of his contract.

By agreeing to the deal, Maybin gave up three years of arbitration and one year of free agency. From MLB.com:

"I liked his defense and base running -- they were standouts last year," Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said of Maybin last week. "His bat was solid, going out there every day, hitting in a division with a lot of pitching.

"And he was pretty consistent. Hopefully we can build on that. He's still young, so he's still developing as a hitter. But we think last year was solid, and he can build off that."

Maybin, who turns 25 years old in April, is coming off the best season of his young career. He hit .264 (.323 OBP, .393 SLG) with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 40 stolen bases in 516 at-bats last season. After stealing just 12 bases in 74 games before the All-Star break, he broke loose for 28 in his final 63 appearances. He was caught just eight times all season.
