Zack Greinke Open To Signing Without Agent

Zack Greinke doesn't have an agent at the moment, but that won't stop him from re-signing with the Brewers if they offer him something good.

Zack Greinke is entering the fourth year of a four-year contract he signed when he was a Royal. At season's end, he is on target to become a free agent.

Last December, Greinke dropped his representation. Still to this day, Greinke doesn't have an agent. It's not necessarily rare for players not to have agents, but it is rare for a player to not have an agent at such a time.

So, as long as Greinke doesn't have an agent, the Brewers pretty much can't try to re-sign him, right? No! You're wrong!

It wouldn't be Zack Greinke if it weren't a little weird. Interestingly, said Greinke in January:

"It’s not like I plan on being my agent, but it is exciting being able to know what’s going on behind the scenes."

Greinke doesn't plan on being his own agent for the long haul, but for now, he's open to reaching an agreement with the Brewers without dealing with a representative. You'd think this would put the Brewers in an advantageous position, since Greinke probably doesn't have professional-level negotiating skills, but we don't know anything for sure.

So we'll see where this goes. Greinke could re-sign with the Brewers on his own. If he doesn't do that, he'll become a more conventional free agent, although he still won't be a conventional free agent. By all indications, whatever talks go on between Greinke and the Brewers will be done in private, with little divulged to the media.

A year ago, Greinke posted a 3.83 ERA. He also posted 201 strikeouts and just 45 walks. Greinke's pretty good, and regardless of whether he has an agent, he's going to end up getting paid more than you, or Aaron Harang.
