Jeremy Hellickson was hit in the head with a baseball during batting practice before the Tigers/Rays game on Wednesday.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was hit in the head by a baseball during batting practice before the Detroit Tigers/Rays game on Wednesday afternoon.

Marc Tompkin of the Tampa Bay Times first reported on a commotion in the Rays' bullpen, and he later relayed that there were paramedics on the scene. A few minutes later, he reported that Hellickson was struck:

From what #Rays players are saying, Hellickson was hit on side of head by a ball ...

Appears #Rays Hellickson taken out of stadium on a cart.

Hellickson was not bleeding + did not lose consciousness, Maddon said. Taken to area hospital.

The good news: there doesn't appear to be any obvious head trauma. But as the saga of Justin Morneau has taught us, there's no such thing as a mild head injury.

Hellickson was not scheduled to pitch in Wednesday's game.
