2012 Arkansas Derby: Bodemeister Dominates Field, Secret Circle Takes 2nd

Bodemeister won the 2012 Arkansas Derby in dominating fashion, edging out Secret Circle by multiple lengths to take home a $1 million purse at Oakland Park in Hot Springs. The pair of Bob Baffert-trained horses were tabbed as favorites before the race. Bodemeister was given 9-5 odds despite racing without blinders for the first time in his career. Secret Circle earned 5-2 odds as the more proven horse, though with less raw potential.

Bodemeister had no trouble with the No. 11 post position. Jockey Mike Smith gradually brought him over to the rail right at the outset as the horse took immediate control from the gate. He held off Stat and Secret Circle by about a length coming around the final turn. Bodemeister opened up from there, pulling away from the field to solidify himself as one of the favorites to win this year's Kentucky Derby.

Sabercat moved up late to take third place, while Cozzetti closed out the Superfecta.

Arkansas Derby 2012: SB Nation Experts Pick Their Winners

With post time at the 2012 Arkansas Derby set for 5:45 p.m. (EDT) Saturday, the experts at SB Nation's horse racing blog And Down The Stretch They Come have made their predictions for the event.

Jared Christopher likes Secret Circle in the 2012 Arkansas Derby, but does have some concerns:

The Bob Baffert tandem entry, Secret Circle and Bodemeister are all the rage in Saturday's Arkansas Derby. Be careful here. Baffert is still figuring out his raw, but talented new horse. The Zayat Stables' owned Bodemeister will run without blinkers for the first time on Saturday. While he seems to have limitless potential, there are other horses with potential that has already been realized in the form of major graded stakes wins. Secret Circle, on the other hand, is one of those other horses. My fear: can he go the distance?

Another contributor to And Down The Stretch They Come likes the chances of two of the horses in the race:

This is a strange race. I see the my top 4 horses all wanting to make the lead with Stat, Secret Circle, Bodemeister, and Isn't He Clever all being speed horses. I don't see a lot of stalking talent in the field so I fully expect these four to really battle. Bodemeister is the new kid on the block, so I expect Mike Smith to push him to the lead and try to run away with it. I either see Bodemeister or Secret Circle take the win.

Arkansas Derby 2012: Start Time And TV Information

Saturday is the 2012 Arkansas Derby, and hopefuls looking to secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby will be running in the 1 1/8-mile race. It's an important tune-up race. There have been five participants in the Arkansas Derby who have gone on to win in Kentucky, most recently in 2004 when Smarty Jones won at Arkansas and went on to win the run for the roses. Last year's Arkansas winner, Archarcharch, went on to finish 15th at Kentucky.

The favorites in the race at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas are Secret Circle and Bodemeister, who have 5-2 and 9-5 odds respectively. Both horses are trained by hall of famer Bob Baffert. In addition to help in qualifying for bigger races to come, a healthy incentive comes in the form of a $1 million prize for the winner of Saturday's race.

Here's the info on how to catch the action:

Arkansas Derby 2012: Bob Baffert Seeking First Win In 1 1/8-Mile Race

With two of the favorites -- Secret Circle and Bodemeister - - Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is well-equipped to get his first win in the $1 million, 1 1/8-mile Arkansas Derby, which takes place at Oaklawn Park on April 14.

Secret Circle ranks 11th on the Kentucky Derby eligibility list, while Bodemeister needs a win to be assured a berth in the 2012 Kentucky Derby on May 5, reports Jack Shinar of BloodHorse.com.

"Secret Circle has been getting the distance so far," said Baffert. "He hasn't shown me he can't get it...they can all get it until they show you they can't."

"This'll be a good race with some nice horses in there," Baffert continued. "I think Bodemeister will be tough. These are two really good horses and even though I don't like to get ahead of myself, it's always special just to have a horse that has a chance in the Kentucky Derby, so hopefully we wind up with one of those on Saturday."
