Dullahan edged out the favored Hansen down the stretch by a length at the 2012 Blue Grass Stakes in Lexington, Ky., to take home the $750,000 purse at the 88th running of the race. He was in 10th place with three furlongs to go but closed very strong late, clocking in at 1:47.94.
Hansen held the lead out of the opening gate, taking the inside from the No. 4 post position and holding off challenger Gung Ho. Dullahan was 10 lengths off the lead coming around the inside of the final turn. He let loose a soon as he hit open track, however. Jockey Kent Desormeaux urged the horse down the middle of the track for what turned out to be a decisive victory.
Hansen entered the race as the heavy favorite, earning 6-5 odds beforehand. Dullahan and Howe The Great were tabbed as the next closest competitors at 6-1, with Prospective (10-1), Ever So Lucky (12-1) and Scatman (12-1) also earning attention as great closers.
