Philadelphia Daily News Cover To Feature Sidney Crosby As 'The Cowardly Lion'

Usually, you expect this sort of thing out of the New York Post, the nation's leader in putting opposing athletes in skirts and the like on newspaper covers. The Philadelphia Daily News will join the club on Wednesday when they run this cover featuring Penguins star Sidney Crosby as "The Cowardly Lion."

We can complain about objectivity ("Sniveling Sidney!"), or the fact that it's not even all that clever, or that it's a pretty poor Photoshop job here, but I have a bigger concern. I'm not terribly familiar with the Cowardly Lion (I know, rough childhood apparently), but I do have Wikipedia on this fancy typin' box I've got here, and, well ...

When he tries to bite Toto, Dorothy calls him a coward, and he admits that he is. The Cowardly Lion joins her so that he can ask The Wizard for courage, being ashamed that, in his cultural role as the King of the Beasts, he is not indeed brave. Despite outward evidence that he is unreasonably fearful, The Cowardly Lion displays great bravery along the way.

...

In this forest, all of the lions and many of the other animals have been eaten by a giant Spider. The Lion finds the Spider asleep and decapitates it. The Tiger and the other animals bow to him and ask him to be their king, and he promises to do so upon his return from accompanying Dorothy to Glinda. Glinda orders the Winged Monkeys to carry him back to the Forest once Dorothy has returned home.

It doesn't even make sense. The Cowardly Lion turns out to not be so cowardly after all. What's that supposed to say about Crosby and the Penguins?
