The Houston Texans lost Mario Williams in free agency and have replaced him with Whitney Mercilus, whom they selected No. 26 in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Mercilus is arguably a better fit for Houston's 3-4 defensive scheme than Williams. Mercilus was a highly productive player during his final season at the University of Illinois, collecting 16 sacks. Although he is a bit of a one year wonder.
The Texans are looking to maintain one of the league's fast rising defenses, and Mercilus should be able to contribute immediately due to his terrific motor and work ethic.
From Dan Kadar's scouting report:
Because of his first step, Mercilus should immediately contribute in the NFL as a pass rusher. His play is reminiscent of Jabaal Sheard, who had a good rookie season for the Cleveland Browns. Left school to help his family financially.
