Kyle Weiland, acquired by the Astros from the Red Sox last offseason along with Jed Lowrie in exchange for Mark Melancon, had made three starts for the team this season without much success: a 6.62 ERA, 1.755 WHIP and five home runs allowed in 17⅔ innings.
Thursday, the team announced Weiland would be examined by a team doctor and have his turn in the rotation skipped.
The exam did not produce good news:

Fernando Abad will join the Astros' bullpen and they'll retool the rotation this way, according to the link above:
Wandy Rodriguez will instead start Friday's series opener in Cincinnati, with Lucas Harrell pitching on Saturday and Bud Norris on Sunday, with each going on four days' rest because of Thursday's off-day. The Astros are hoping to be able to slot Harrell back into the rotation on Tuesday.
