Derby Week has arrived! Churchill Downs begins it's 2012 Spring Meet on Saturday night with a twilight card beginning at 6:00pm Eastern. Over the next few days, contenders for the 2012 Kentucky Derby will arrive in Louisville from all over the country (and one colt from Ireland). Below is a look at some of the items making news on Saturday, April 28th:

  • Creative Cause, a multiple stakes winner and one of the top West Coast contenders for the 2012 Kentucky Derby, arrived at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning after shipping in from California.

Trained by Mike Harrington, Creative Cause is a son of European champions Giant's Causeway and a winner of four races from eight starts, including two seconds and two thirds. The grey colt has banked over $850,000 in earnings in his career.
  • Another contender from the West Coast, Rousing Sermon, also arrived in Louisville on Saturday morning. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Rousing Sermon finished third in the G2-Louisiana Derby on April 1st after a couple of disappointing efforts at Santa Anita in February and March. As a juvenile, Rousing Sermon won the ungraded Cal Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita and was second by a neck to Liaison in the G1-CashCall Futurity.
  • Union Rags, expected by many to be the morning line favorite for the Derby after the post positions are drawn on Wednesday, May 2nd, put in a solid five furlong breeze over the main track at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning. Under regular rider Julien Leparoux, Union Rags worked the distance in 59.97 seconds, third fastest of the 53 horses to work that distance on Saturday morning.

Other horses to work on Saturday morning were Dullahan (five furlongs in 1:01.20; 9/53) and Went the Day Well (five furlongs in 1:01.00; 6/53)
