2012 NFL Mock Draft 2.0 (Updated 4/3/2012 12:30pm w comments)

A few things. My Mock drafts are based on my consensus big board, what I have been hearing around the NFL, reading articles, looking at GM histories, mixing needs with wants, and BPA. AKA - I do my research.

Furthermore - As we approach the draft - rumors are spreading, smoke screens are being created, GM's are researching. Lots is going on. At the end of the day - I will go by two philosophies. BPA - and GM tendencies. Lets get things started.

  1. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS ANDREW LUCK (QB) - STANFORD
I don't care about the RG3 reports. Andrew Luck is too good. I have questioned him several times. He may not have the strongest arm, yes he may have a goofy voice, and his ceiling is far from being reached. The kid is awesome, and he is a franchise. He is the perfect man to take over Peyton Manning.

  2. WASHINGTON REDSKINS - RG3 (QB) - BAYLOR
This is a special draft. Two, out of the world franchise QBs available for the taking. 1 & 2 - you can't go wrong. I do believe RG3 has a higher ceiling. But I am excited to see both of these guys. I consider this a 1A and a 1B kinda situation. Both are 1st overall to me.

  3. Minnesota Vikings - MATT KALIL (LT) - USC
Matt Kalil is athletic and the cleanest LT prospect I have ever seen. Get a WR later Wikings, a CB later, please do not change your decision to pick Kalil - he's a pro-bowler. I think that Vikings taking someone other Kalil is just fooling around with the league.

  4. CLEVELAND BROWNS - TRENT RICHARDSON (RB) - ALABAMA
Many think Tannehill - I say no. They are "happy" with McCoy. Richardson is the kind of player that you can build an offense around - especially in the tough weather in Cleveland. Richardson should be the player - the Browns can find McCoy some competition later.

  5. TAMPA BAY BUCS - MORRIS CLAIBORNE (CB) - LSU
Remember Patrick Peterson? Remember how good he is? Think Peterson's skill set in a pure cover corner. Claiborne is too good. Period. I've heard many rumors about the Bucs taking Trent Richardson. Richardson is awesome - but do you really pass up on a player like Morris? We all know the importance of the passing game, and the value of the RB in all rounds.

  6. ST LOUIS RAMS - JUSTIN BLACKMON (WR) - OKLAHOMA ST.
I think Trent Richardson is a real possibility here. The Rams really like him. But give Bradford a true #1 receiver. Blackmon - well simply put - he is the man.

  7. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - MELVIN INGRAM (DE) - SOUTH CAROLINA
This was the hardest pick for me. I debated between OT, WR, and DE. I think Ingram has too much upside, he plays fast and he plays awesome. I like him on the Jaguars. And given the QBs in the division you NEED to pressure them. Ingram over Floyd & Reiff (Apparently GM never takes offensive lineman in the first) -
My comments regarding Gene Smith were wrong - I went back to check out Jags history - and i forgot about Eugene Monroe. But I also read somewhere that apparently the jaguars would not be interested in taking an offensive lineman in the 1st.

  8. MIAMI DOLPHINS - RYAN TANNEHILL (QB) - TEXAS A&M
Although I believe that Matt Moore will do well in the Dolphins system - I feel like the Dolphins can't pass on Tannehill if he is here. And I am also hearing the connections between the OC, HC, and Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill def has the potential to be a franchise QB - but it will take time. He has the tools. But the Head office will have to really think this through. Many years ago the Dolphins took Jake Long over Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. Can they take another offensive lineman and pass on another QB? I don't think so..........

  9. CAROLINA PANTHERS - MICHAEL BROCKERS (DT) - LSU
I think Brockers is better than Poe. The tape does not lie. Brockers it is here - even with the defensive tackles taken last year's draft. The defensive backs will be taken later.
Some think that Cox should be the pick here. For now I am going too keep it Brockers based the consensus big-board, but things could change.

  10. BUFFALO BILLS - MICHAEL FLOYD (WR) - NOTRE DAME
This was the hardest pick in the draft. I so badly want to give The Bills an offensive tackle - given their lack of depth. But none of the OT in this range are worthy of the 10th pick. Mike Adams is a "reach" as is Cordy Glenn. Jonathan Martin and Riley Reiff to fit the "Nix Mold." But if Buffalo really feels that one of those players is their guy they will pull the trigger. Floyd has elite potential and will take significant pressure off of Stevie Johnson.

  11. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS - DAVID DECASATRO (OG) - STANFORD
Not only is DeCastro the BPA available but he fits a need AND he is projected to be a superstar being compared to players like Steve Huchingson. Decastro will help pave the way for Peyton Hillis and Jamaal Charles.

  12. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS - LUKE KUECHLEY (LB) - BC
Kuechley will become the QB of this young and highly talented defense. Seahawks didn't sign David Hawthorne.
Kuechley is considered by most a top 10 pick. He has the talent and all the intangibles you look for in a player at this position. You have seen the impact that players like Ray Lewis and Patrick Willis have had on their teams. I am not saying he is Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis - but his talent and most of all his leadership are awesome. Some consider DE here. Coples is a possibility but he comes with a few red flags. Furthermore didn't the Seahawks re-sign their DE Red Bryant?

  13. ARIZONA CARDINALS - RILEY REIFF (OT) - IOWA
Another tough pick - but Kolb must be protected. A WR is also possible - because this offense runs through Larry Fitzgerald and another WR to take pressure off of him would be advantageous. However IDK if Wright or Hill can be the players here. Cardinals are weak on the offensive line - Riley Reiff is the BPA - take him.

  14. DALLAS COWBOYS - QUINTON COPLES (DE) - UNC
Coples has Top 5 talent but his work ethic is questionable. Rob Ryan will get the best out of him and Coples will help this defensive line. He is the BPA available and improves the team. Coples on one side and Demarcus Ware on the other side. Have fun blocking that NFC East.

  15. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - FLETCHER COX (DT) - MISSISSIPPI
They got their ILB - Andy Reid loves his DT's - and Cox is Mayock's #1 rated DT.

  16. NEW YORK JETS - COURTNEY UPSHAW (OLB) - ALABAMA
Whats a Rex Ryan defense with out a rush LB. Upshaw was awesome in his pro-day and he has experience in a 3-4 defense. This is the right pick for a defensive team and a defensive minded coach.

  17. CINCINNATI BENGALS - DRE KIRKPATRICK (CB) - ALABAMA
Ah another Alabama player in the 1st rd. Bengals are in need of help in the secondary and Kirkpatrick has the talent to upgrade. Gilmore is rising up boards - he is also an option. If the off field issues do not bother - Jenkins is also a possibility

  18. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS - NICK PERRY (OLB) - USC
Perry stays in Cali - and continues to create mayhem for opposing QBs. I love Perry - and I love him on the Chargers

  19. CHICAGO BEARS - CORDY GLENN (OT) - GEORGIA
Bears need to continue to upgrade their offensive line. Whether its on the inside or the outside Glenn is an upgrade. Some say he is perfect for Mike Tice offensive mold.

  20. TENNESSEE TITANS - JONATHAN MARTIN (OT) - STANFORD
Apparently Titans don't take offensive lineman early. Martin drops - he is an elite tackle. Some say he sucks, some love him. But there is a reason Luck stayed clean for so long. Yes Luck got rid of the ball but someone needs to protect his blindside.

  21. CINCINNATI BENGALS - MARK BARRON (SS) - ALABAMA
The upgrade in the secondary continues - another Alabama product joins his former team-mate to continue to improve a young, awesome, Bengals secondary.

  22. CLEVELAND BROWNS - KENDALL WRIGHT (WR) - BAYLOR
The Browns like Wright. The Browns need a weapon. Nothing better than a field stretching speedster to create room for Trent Richardson and make the offensive more dynamic.

  23. DETROIT LIONS - STEPHON GILMORE (CB) - SOUTH CAROLINA
Gilmore is moving up the boards. Lions need help in the secondary. Perfect fit.

  24. PITTSBURGH STEELERS - DONTARI POE (NT) - MEMPHIS
Yes - the tape does not lie. And guess what - Poe's tape is not impressive - that is why he drops. But that does not mean he has the potential to be great. The Steelers have an aging NT - Poe can learn and eventually replace him. This is a perfect fit.

  25. DENVER BRONCOS - ALSHON JEFFERY (WR) - SOUTH CAROLINA
DT can come later. You can't tell me that the Broncos don't have Manning's success in mind while making this pick. How about a big, productive, possession, WR for manning to target? I say get him in.
I knew this would be the most controversial pick. Lets break it down. The team is moving away from Tebow as starting QB - to Peyton Manning. Their style is the difference between night and day. Currently the Broncos WR include D. Thomas, E. Decker, A. Caldwell. TE includes Tamme. So you tell me.....Does Peyton Manning need more weapons? Does this offense need more weapons? If Broncos nation does not believe an offensive player should be taken at this position - I'll make note of it. There are some good defensive lineman, and defensive backs available at this point........But if I'm the front office, I want to help Manning as much as possible. I did not choose Stephen Hill because he is D. Thomas 2.0

  26. HOUSTON TEXANS - STEPHEN HILL (WR) - GEORGIA TECH
The Texans love Stephen Hill here - I have a few other players in mind BUT - We saw what happened to the offense when Andre Johnson went down.

  27. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - DEVON STILL (DT) - PENN ST.
Patriots will look to improve two positions on the defense. Rush OLB and a DE. Devon Still should be taken higher but falls into their laps.

  28. GREENBAY PACKERS - JEREL WORTHY (DT) - MICHIGAN ST.
They filled their need at Center - Jeff Saturday is a GREAT signing. But they need an upgrade on the DE spot. I love Worthy.

  29. BALTIMORE RAVENS - DONTA HIGHTOWER (LB) - ALABAMA
Hightower has all the potential in the world. Ravens need to replace Ray Lewis at some point. Donta gets to learn from the best and will eventually take over becoming the center of the great Ravens defense.

  30. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS - JANORIS JENKINGS (CB) - NORTH ALABAMA
Jenkins has the talent. He has top 10 talent - watch the tape. But he has off field issues - those issues will not be forwarded to the NFL - Haurbaugh will make sure.

  31. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - WHITNEY MERCILUS (DE/OLB) - ILLINOIS
Whitney can play both 3-4 OLB and 4-3DE - he is the perfect fit for the hybrid Patriots defense. Perfect fit.

  32. NEW YORK GIANTS - DOUG MARTIN (RB) - BOISE ST.
Brandon Jacobs is gone. Ahmad Bradshaw received a Bone Marrow injection. Remember - the Giants are a RUNNING TEAM - regardless of the legendary Eli Manning. Doug Martin is a big, powerful, quick RB. He is a perfect fit for the Giants. He must be taken at this point.
The Giants not only need a RB but should take one, and Doug Martin is more than worthy of this pick. Tom Coughlin is a coach that wants to run the ball. Yes some say that they are no longer a running team. That is untrue - not under Tom Coughlin. Stick to your roots. Doug Martin is a PERFECT fit for a tough nosed Giants Team.
