2012 Wood Memorial Results: Gemologist Still Unbeaten On Way To Kentucky Derby

Gemologist is now five for five on the way to the 2012 Kentucky Derby, outlasting Alpha down the stretch to win the 2012 Wood Memorial. Gemologist finished at 6/5, Alpha 2/1. As predicted, Gemologist got off to a great start by stalking the leader for the majority of the race. The colt was five-wide going into the first turn, settling into third down the backstretch, and overtook pacesetter The Lumber Guy at the quarter pole, fighting off a spirited stretch run from second-place finishing Alpha.

Gemologist paid 4.40 / 3.00 / 2.40 with the win at the Wood, only his second-ever stakes race. Gemologist now heads to a likely start in the field at the Kentucky Derby, only the third start for the colt in 2012 in a very light prep schedule.

Gemologist's father was the 2000 Horse of the Year winner, Tiznow, and has the same owner/trainer combination as Super Saver, the 2010 Derby winner. The last three Wood Memorial winners have not made the cut of the Kentucky Derby for various reasons.

Here are the official results:

  1. 6 Gemologist 4.40 / 3.00 / 2.40
  2. 1 Alpha 3.10 / 2.80
  3. 4 Teeth Of The Dog $9.70

Wood Memorial Stakes 2012: Experts Disagree In Predictions For Winner

As three-year-old horses jockey, so to speak, for position to make the field in next month's Kentucky Derby, one of the races many will be keeping their eye on will be Saturday's Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct. Although Gemologist is the favorite as of Saturday morning (8/5) with Alpha (5/2) just behind, not all racing experts agree on who will wind up in the winner's circle.

SB Nation's resident racing expert, Matt Gardner, believes that the favorite has the odds for a reason:

It's all about Gemologist in this year's Wood. Assuming he gets away from the gate cleanly, he should be able to sit in a perfect stalking position off of The Lumber Guy through the first six furlongs. If he maintains the form he displayed in his season debut at Gulfstream in mid-March, it's unlikely any of the horses in this field will be able to run him down in the stretch.

However, over at SB Nation's horse racing blog, And Down the Stretch They Come, J.P. Fanshawe thinks Street Life, who opened on Saturday with 4-1 odds, will pull off the upset. No word yet on Thug Life, who hasn't been the same since '97.

2012 Wood Memorial: Preview And Picks

The undefeated Gemologist looks to solidify a spot in the 2012 Kentucky Derby with a win in Saturday's Grade 1 Wood Memorial.

Wood Memorial Stakes 2012: Start Time And TV Information

The Kentucky Derby is now just under a month away, which means the spring's big pre-Derby races have finally arrived. One of those is the Wood Memorial Stakes, featuring some horses looking to secure spots in the Kentucky Derby. There are a total of eight horses in the race, and the purse totals $1 million.

The nine furlong (1 1/8 miles) race was first run in 1925 and it's one of five Grade I races that are run in preparation for the Triple Crown. The 40,000 capacity, 17,000 seat Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York has hosted the race since its beginning.

Post time for the horses is 5:15 p.m. ET. The race will be broadcast on NBC as part of their coverage of multiple big races that are taking place around the country on Saturday afternoon and late evening.

Wood Memorial Stakes 2012 Odds: Gemologist, Alpha The Favorites

According to Horse Racing Nation, Gemologist (8-5) and Alpha (5-2) remain the favorites among the eight entrants to win Saturday's 2012 Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in Jamaica, N.Y.

Jeff Frank of The Sports Network is concerned about Alpha's two-month layoff:

Another colt that needs to hit the board is Alpha. The son of Bernardini hasn't raced since winning the Withers Stakes on Feb. 4, but he will be the second choice in the wagering behind Gemologist. One thought to keep in mind is the fact he has already won off a two-month layoff as well as won his initial start as a 2-year-old by six lengths at 6-1 odds.
