2012 Santa Anita Derby Results: I'll Have Another Wins By A Nose Over Creative Cause

In the 75th running of the Santa Anita Derby, I'll Have Another took home the $750,000 purse, beating out what many had handicapped, Creative Cause, a Kentucky Derby contender, by a short nose. It was the fifth nose win in Santa Anita Derby history, and the first since 1985.

The mile-and-1/8 race was stocked with early speed. Favorite Creative Cause was quick from the inside gate but BlueSkiesNRainbows took an early lead and led by two lengths on the back stretch. Creative Cause came up the rail on the final turn and then burst down the home stretch with I'll Have Another challenging from the outside. I'll Have Another was running second and third coming around the turn and was passed by Creative Cause as they approached BlueSkiesNRainbows.

I'll Have Another put in a tremendous run down the stretch with Mario Guiterrez aboard. The fantastic duel at the line was a photo finish, with I'll Have Another in front by a nose on the outside.

Creative Cause was the odds-on favorite to win the Santa Anita, but he ran without blinkers on and perhaps got distracted, as he was erratic down the stretch.

Below are the payouts:

4-I'll Have Another $10.20 $4.20 $3.60
1-Creative Cause $2.60 $2.40
9-Blueskiesnrainbows $9.60

$1.00 Exacta $10.60
$1.00 Trifecta $250.20
$0.10 Superfecta $186.95
$2.00 Double $137.20
$1.00 Pick 3 $1,027.10

Santa Anita Derby 2012: Experts Unanimously Expect Creative Cause To Win

Despite being given a somewhat unfavorable post position, first lane, Creative Control is an overwhelming favorite among bookmakers at the 2012 Santa Anita Derby. Likewise, experts at SB Nation's horse racing blog, And Down the Stretch They Come, unanimously believe that he will take the top spot on the podium. The three-year-old colt may not be the favorite for next month's Kentucky Derby, but he'll be among the horses expected to win some money in the country's most famous race.

All three of the staff writers at ADTSTC think Creative Control will win. Here's what Jared L. Christopher had to say:

So far the races leading up to the 2012 Santa Anita Derby has shown one thing - Creative Cause is the most talented horse in the race. Even so, there are three important things to consider when handicapping this race. 1. He will be breaking from the #1 post, if the field collapses on him he will be forced to find a hole or go wide. 2. Trainer Mike Harrington is still tinkering with his gray colt. Creative Cause will run without blinkers for the first time in his career. Harrington is hoping the added vision will help his horse find another gear if he is challenged down the stretch. 3. Never count out a Bob Baffert horse at Santa Anita Park!

The smart money is on any other horse in the race -- a $2 bet would less than double your investment -- but the play might be on place or show for this one.
