2012 Wood Memorial Results: Gemologist Still Unbeaten On Way To Kentucky Derby

Stay connected with SB Nation

Gemologist is now five for five on the way to the 2012 Kentucky Derby, outlasting Alpha down the stretch to win the 2012 Wood Memorial. Gemologist finished at 6/5, Alpha 2/1. As predicted, Gemologist got off to a great start by stalking the leader for the majority of the race. The colt was five-wide going into the first turn, settling into third down the backstretch, and overtook pacesetter The Lumber Guy at the quarter pole, fighting off a spirited stretch run from second-place finishing Alpha.

Gemologist paid 4.40 / 3.00 / 2.40 with the win at the Wood, only his second-ever stakes race. Gemologist now heads to a likely start in the field at the Kentucky Derby, only the third start for the colt in 2012 in a very light prep schedule.

Gemologist's father was the 2000 Horse of the Year winner, Tiznow, and has the same owner/trainer combination as Super Saver, the 2010 Derby winner. The last three Wood Memorial winners have not made the cut of the Kentucky Derby for various reasons.

Here are the official results:

  1. 6 Gemologist 4.40 / 3.00 / 2.40
  2. 1 Alpha 3.10 / 2.80
  3. 4 Teeth Of The Dog $9.70
