Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister left Saturday's game against the Red Sox after straining his side.

Doug Fister lasted just about four innings on Saturday before quickly leaving the Detroit Tigers matchup with the Boston Red Sox. At the time, it was unclear why Fister was pulled from the game; a trainer and manager Jim Leyland came out to check on him and made the decision to remove him.

The Associated Press via Sports Illustrated clarified the injury a short time later:

The Tigers led 2-0 when manager Jim Leyland and trainer Kevin Rand came out to the mound to check on Fister in the middle of an at-bat by Ryan Sweeney. Duane Below came on in relief and got out of the inning.

It was not immediately clear what was wrong with Fister, but the injury was clarified a short while later in the press box. Fister also dealt with a sore right middle finger during spring training.

There's been no word on Fister's status going forward, or whether the injury will force him to miss his next start. The Tigers didn't miss him much on Saturday, teeing off on Josh Beckett to the tune of seven runs in five innings so far.

Below has remained in the game in relief, allowing just one hit in an inning and a third so far.
