6'2'', 199 pounds | Wide Receiver | California
Games Watched: Stanford, Texas, USC
Body Control: Playing with a subpar quarterback at California, Marvin Jones was constantly forced to make adjustments to the ball in the air. He has outstanding body control, especially along the sidelines. Jones is an excellent athlete at his size.
Hands: Although he occasionally put the ball on the turf and showed a tendency to body catch, Marvin Jones has very reliable hands. He rarely drops a pass and caught plenty of poorly thrown balls at Cal. Jones also made some impressive shoe string catches in the games I watched.
Release: Marvin Jones has no trouble getting a strong burst off the line of scrimmage. He uses his size and strength to beat press coverage effectively.
Route Running: Jones is a polished route runner who runs a number of routes well. He sets up his routes well with head fakes, and he has the agility to make smooth transitions in and out of his cuts. A smooth athlete, Jones shows a willingness to work along the sidelines, over the middle and on deep routes.
Size: Jones measured in a bit shorter than expected, but 6-feet-2-inches tall is adequate height for a wide receiver. His leaping ability helps make up for the lack of elite height, and he wins plenty of jump balls.
Speed: Clocked at 4.46 in the 40-yard dash and 6.81 in the 3-cone drill, Jones possesses quickness and speed to burn. He's not the fastest straight-line runner in the draft, but Jones has the type of quickness that will make him an outstanding route runner at the next level.
Final Word: Marvin Jones is one of my favorite mid-round wide receivers. He has size, athleticism and the route running to make an immediate transition to the NFL. Jones works hard and makes difficult plays on the ball with regularity. I think he has the ability to be a solid No. 2 wide receiver at the next level.
